## FDVV vs SCHD

**SCHD pays more and costs less. FDVV holds the market's largest tech companies alongside its
dividend payers.** The two share one top-ten name, Coca-Cola. Over three and five years FDVV came
out ahead, and over the past year SCHD did.

Yields are on each fund's price at the October 29 close.

## What is FDVV?

**FDVV is the Fidelity High Dividend ETF, an index ETF that buys large and mid-sized US companies
with high dividends that Fidelity expects to keep paying and raising them.** It launched on
September 12, 2016, trades on NYSE Arca and charges 0.15% a year.

**The FDVV stock price was $62.91 at the October 29, 2026 close**, against a 52-week range of
$53.77 to $64.54. Like any ETF it trades all day at a market price that stays close to its NAV:
Fidelity put the gap at 0.04% that day. FDVV held 109 positions and $10.17 billion on September
30.

## What is SCHD?

**SCHD is the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF, an index ETF that holds 100 high-yielding US
stocks with at least ten straight years of dividends.** It launched on October 20, 2011, trades on
NYSE Arca and charges 0.06% a year. At $107.89 billion on September 30, it is about ten times
FDVV's size.

SCHD closed at $35.61 on October 29, 2026. It split 3-for-1 on October 10, 2024, so quotes and
dividends from before then look three times larger. The split did not change what any holder
owned.

## How each index picks its stocks

**SCHD's index screens for dividend history and balance-sheet strength. FDVV's index ranks
stocks within each sector on yield, payout ratio and dividend growth, then tilts toward the
higher-yielding sectors.**

The Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index, behind SCHD, starts with US stocks that have paid a
dividend for at least ten years in a row and are worth at least $500 million. It scores the
highest yielders on cash flow to total debt, return on equity, dividend yield and five-year
dividend growth, and keeps 100. It leaves out REITs and master limited partnerships. No stock can
pass 4% of the index and no sector 25% when it is rebuilt. S&P Dow Jones Indices reviews the list
once a year and rebalances it every quarter.

The Fidelity High Dividend Index, behind FDVV, scores stocks within every sector on three things:
high dividend yield, low payout ratio and high dividend growth. A low payout ratio means the
company pays out a small share of its earnings, which leaves room to raise the dividend. Every
sector stays in the index; higher-yielding sectors get more weight and lower-yielding ones less.
Inside each sector, bigger companies get bigger weights. Up to 10% can be outside the US when the
index is rebalanced.

The size rule puts Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft at the top of a high-dividend fund: they are the
largest [megacaps](/learn/what-is-a-megacap) in FDVV's largest sector, information technology.

## Top holdings and sectors

**FDVV's three largest holdings are 20.38% of the fund. SCHD's ten largest each sit near 4%,
because its index caps each stock at 4% when it is rebuilt.**

| | FDVV | Weight | SCHD | Weight |
|---|---|---:|---|---:|
| 1 | Nvidia | 7.80% | Texas Instruments | 4.69% |
| 2 | Apple | 6.95% | Qualcomm | 4.62% |
| 3 | Microsoft | 5.63% | Procter & Gamble | 4.20% |

| 6 | JPMorgan Chase | 2.71% | Merck | 4.09% |
| 7 | Coca-Cola | 2.01% | Amgen | 4.06% |
| 8 | Alphabet | 1.96% | UnitedHealth | 3.92% |
| 9 | Philip Morris | 1.88% | Verizon | 3.90% |
| 10 | Bank of America | 1.80% | ConocoPhillips | 3.89% |

|---|---:|---:|
| Information technology | 31.19% | 12.22% |
| Financials | 19.36% | 9.14% |
| Consumer discretionary | 11.74% | 6.70% |

| Health care | 3.45% | 19.20% |
| Industrials | 3.59% | 11.28% |
| Communication services | 3.55% | 6.01% |
| Energy | Not listed | 15.38% |

Weights are as of September 30, 2026. Fidelity's sector list for FDVV adds up to 99.74% and shows no
energy line. SCHD's weight sits in the sectors that pay steady cash: staples, health care and energy
make up 54.55% of it. FDVV's sits in tech and banks, plus REITs and utilities, which make up 0.09% of
SCHD.

## FDVV and SCHD dividend history

**Both funds pay four times a year. FDVV paid $1.714 a share over the past 12 months and SCHD
$1.054.** On $10,000 at October 29 prices, that is about $272 a year from FDVV and $296 from SCHD,
before tax. In a taxable account you owe tax on each payment in the year it arrives, reinvested or
not.

| Ex-dividend | FDVV per share | Ex-dividend | SCHD per share |
|---|---:|---|---:|
| September 18, 2026 | $0.362 | September 23, 2026 | $0.2665 |
| June 18, 2026 | $0.519 | June 24, 2026 | $0.2525 |
| March 20, 2026 | $0.440 | March 25, 2026 | $0.2569 |
| December 19, 2025 | $0.393 | December 10, 2025 | $0.2782 |
| September 19, 2025 | $0.377 | September 24, 2025 | $0.2604 |
| June 20, 2025 | $0.447 | June 25, 2025 | $0.2602 |
| March 21, 2025 | $0.419 | March 26, 2025 | $0.2488 |
| December 20, 2024 | $0.479 | December 11, 2024 | $0.2645 |

All of it was dividend income: neither fund paid a capital gain or return of capital in these two
years. The next payments on both schedules fall in December.

**SCHD paid more per share every calendar year from 2018 to 2025 than the year before. FDVV's
payout fell twice in that stretch, in 2020 and 2024.** From 2021 to 2025, FDVV's yearly payout
grew 50% and SCHD's 40%.

| Paid per share | FDVV | SCHD |
|---|---:|---:|
| 2025 | $1.636 | $1.047 |
| 2024 | $1.470 | $0.995 |
| 2023 | $1.592 | $0.886 |
| 2022 | $1.283 | $0.854 |
| 2021 | $1.088 | $0.750 |
| 2020 | $1.025 | $0.676 |
| 2019 | $1.276 | $0.575 |

We adjusted SCHD's amounts for the 2024 split.

The first table shows two yields. The 30-day SEC yield estimates what the stocks in each fund
earned in dividends over the past month, after fees, as a yearly rate. The 12-month figure is what
each fund paid. SCHD's price rose 9.5% from September 30 to October 29, so on today's price its
yield sits below the 3.24% Schwab reported for September 30.

## Returns to October 29, 2026

**With dividends reinvested, FDVV returned 90.2% over five years and SCHD 64.8%. Over the past
year SCHD returned 37.8% and FDVV 14.9%.**

| Total return, dividends reinvested | FDVV | SCHD |
|---|---:|---:|
| 2026 so far | +13.5% | +33.0% |
| One year | +14.9% | +37.8% |
| Three years | +86.3% | +78.2% |
| Five years | +90.2% | +64.8% |

| Calendar year | FDVV | SCHD |
|---|---:|---:|
| 2025 | +17.1% | +4.3% |
| 2024 | +21.8% | +11.7% |
| 2023 | +18.0% | +4.5% |
| 2022 | -4.2% | -3.3% |
| 2021 | +29.2% | +29.9% |

Returns are from Yahoo Finance's dividend-adjusted closes to October 29, 2026. Run to September 30,
the same data matches the funds' own market-price returns. FDVV came out ahead in each year from
2023 to 2025. SCHD is ahead this year, and it fell less in the 2022 sell-off.

## Which one fits what you want?

**SCHD pays more and overlaps less with an S&P 500 fund. FDVV pays a little less and keeps the
largest tech companies.** SCHD costs 0.06%, holds only US companies and has paid more each year
than the year before since 2018. It holds none of Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Broadcom or Alphabet.
FDVV costs 0.15%, and its biggest holdings are the megacaps you already own in an index fund such
as **[FXAIX or VOO](/blog/fxaix-vs-voo)**.

If you already hold an S&P 500 fund, SCHD adds weight to companies that are a small part of it.
FDVV doubles up on Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft. Both pay quarterly. For a monthly check, the
**[JEPI vs JEPQ comparison](/blog/jepi-vs-jepq)** covers funds that sell options for a higher
payout and give up part of the upside to get it. This is not a recommendation to buy either fund.

## What the accounts we track say about the holdings

**Across the accounts we track, FDVV's ten largest holdings drew 2,255 mentions in the 30 days to
October 28, 2026. SCHD's drew 164.** The last column is the share of each stock's mentions from
accounts with a strong [graded track record](/learn/how-a-track-record-is-graded): Quantral grades
every call it tracks, losers included. Across every stock in the same 30 days, that share was 25.5%.

| Holding | Weight in
FDVV | Weight in
SCHD | Mentions,
30 days | From accounts
with a strong record |
|---|---:|---:|---|---:|
| Nvidia (NVDA) | 7.80% | | 788 (bull 71% / bear 21%) | 22% |
| Alphabet (GOOGL, GOOG) | 1.96% | | 635 (bull 61% / bear 32%) | 21% |
| Apple (AAPL) | 6.95% | | 258 (bull 54% / bear 40%) | 21% |
| Microsoft (MSFT) | 5.63% | | 254 (bull 59% / bear 28%) | 19% |
| Broadcom (AVGO) | 2.93% | | 196 (bull 71% / bear 25%) | 23% |
| Dell (DELL) | 3.69% | | 55 (bull 42% / bear 56%) | 20% |
| Qualcomm (QCOM) | | 4.62% | 48 (bull 67% / bear 27%) | 50% |

A blank weight means the stock is outside that fund's top ten. Nvidia, Alphabet, Apple and Microsoft are the most discussed names in FDVV, and the bullish calls
on them outnumbered the bearish ones. Dell was the exception: 56% of its 55 mentions were bearish.

SCHD's holdings came up far less in our coverage. Qualcomm, its second-largest, led with 48
mentions, and half of them came from accounts with a strong record: 24 mentions from 9 accounts,
twice the share across all stocks. Two-thirds of Qualcomm's mentions were bullish. UnitedHealth
drew 30 mentions, Verizon 26 and the rest of SCHD's top ten 13 or fewer each.

Your fund's weights stay put whatever the chatter. The table shows which of your holdings the
accounts with a record are calling, and in which direction.

<MidCta heading="See the calls behind the stocks in your dividend fund" text="In the Quantral app, Nvidia, Apple, Qualcomm, Coca-Cola and the rest of these funds' holdings each open to their score and every call behind it, with the track record of the account that made it." />
