# Stock market holidays 2026 and 2027: every day the NYSE and Nasdaq close

> Every US stock market holiday and 1pm early close for 2026 and 2027. Open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, closed on Good Friday, and what the bond market does on each.

The US stock market closes for ten holidays a year and shuts three hours early on a few more.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq keep the same calendar, so the tables below cover both,
for 2026 and 2027. The holidays that trip people up are the ones where stocks trade while the
bond market and the banks take the day off.

**The stock market is open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and closed on Good Friday.** The
other holidays follow the federal calendar you would expect.

## Stock market holidays 2026

## Stock market holidays 2027

| <Dt d="Dec 24, 2027" w="Friday" /> | Christmas (observed) | <Mkt s="closed" /> | <Mkt s="closed" /> |

Three 2027 dates shift because the holiday lands on a weekend. Juneteenth is a Saturday, so the
market closes Friday, June 18. July 4 is a Sunday, so it closes Monday, July 5. Christmas is a
Saturday, so it closes Friday, December 24, and there is no 1pm early close the day before.

New Year's Day 2028 is also a Saturday. The NYSE does not move a Saturday New Year's Day to the
Friday before, so **the market is open on Friday, December 31, 2027**.

The bond market column follows the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association
(SIFMA), which recommends closes for US Treasury and other bond trading. It also adds 2pm early
closes that stocks do not have: the Friday before Memorial Day, the day before Independence Day,
and New Year's Eve, plus the Thursday before Good Friday and Thursday, December 23 in 2027.

can change hours at short notice, as they did for national days of mourning in the past, so
check the exchange's own page if you are planning around a specific date.

## Days the stock market is open but banks and bonds are closed

Stocks trade and bonds do not on two federal holidays: **Columbus Day** (also observed as
Indigenous Peoples' Day, the second Monday of October) and **Veterans Day** (November 11). On both, the
NYSE and Nasdaq trade normal hours, 9:30am to 4:00pm Eastern. The bond market is closed on
SIFMA's recommendation, and the Federal Reserve banks are closed, with many banks closing
alongside them.

On those two days:

- **You can buy and sell stocks and stock funds as usual.** Orders fill at market prices.
- **Expect bank transfers to take a day longer.** Money you move from your bank to your broker
usually lands a business day later than it would on a normal weekday.

Good Friday is the reverse case. It is not a federal holiday, so banks are open, but the stock
market closes. In 2026 the bond market stays open until noon, and in 2027 it closes for the day.

## Normal stock market hours

On a regular day the market opens at 9:30am and closes at 4:00pm Eastern, Monday to Friday. It
is closed on weekends. Outside those hours there is pre-market and
[after-hours trading](/learn/what-is-after-hours-trading), which runs on thinner volume and
wider spreads. On a 1pm early-close day, NYSE's own late trading sessions end at 5:00pm
instead of 8:00pm, and stock options stop at 1:15pm.

If you invest on a schedule, a holiday changes nothing important. Your broker decides what
happens to a recurring buy set for a closed day, and most move it to the next trading day, so
check the rule once. For a [long-term plan](/learn/long-term-investing-and-market-sentiment) like
[dollar-cost averaging](/learn/what-is-dollar-cost-averaging), one day's delay is noise.

## The conversation keeps going on a market holiday

The accounts we track keep posting while the market is shut, and a long weekend is one of the
few times you can see a crowd form a view before the price gives them one. On Labor Day 2026 we watched
[two crowds form a view while the market was shut](/blog/most-mentioned-stocks-sep-7-11), then
saw how those stocks opened on Tuesday. Quantral grades those calls against what the price did
next, so when the market reopens, the ideas in the app come with the track record of the
people who made them.

## Common questions

### Is the stock market open on Columbus Day?

Yes. The NYSE and Nasdaq are open normal hours on Columbus Day (Monday, October 12, 2026 and
Monday, October 11, 2027). The bond market is closed, and so are many banks.

### Is the stock market open on Veterans Day?

Yes. Stocks trade normal hours on Veterans Day (Wednesday, November 11, 2026 and Thursday,
November 11, 2027). The bond market and the Federal Reserve banks are closed.

### Is the stock market open on Thanksgiving?

No. The stock market is closed on Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, November 26, 2026 and Thursday,
November 25, 2027. The bond market is closed too.

### Is the stock market open on Black Friday?

Yes, for a shorter day. The day after Thanksgiving, stocks close early at 1:00pm Eastern and the
bond market at 2:00pm. That is Friday, November 27, 2026 and Friday, November 26, 2027.

### Is the stock market open on Christmas Eve?

In 2026, yes, until 1:00pm Eastern on Thursday, December 24. In 2027, no: Christmas falls on a
Saturday, so the market takes Friday, December 24 off as the observed holiday.

### Is the stock market open on Good Friday?

No. The NYSE and Nasdaq close on Good Friday even though it is not a federal holiday: Friday,
April 3, 2026 and Friday, March 26, 2027. Banks are open. The bond market closes at noon in
2026 and stays closed all day in 2027.

### Is the stock market open on Juneteenth?

No. The stock market has closed for Juneteenth since 2022. In 2026 that is Friday, June 19. In
2027 the holiday falls on a Saturday, so the market closes Friday, June 18.

### Is the stock market open on New Year's Eve?

Yes, stocks trade a full day on New Year's Eve. The bond market closes early at 2:00pm. On
Friday, December 31, 2027 the stock market is open, because the NYSE does not move a Saturday
New Year's Day to the Friday before.

### Are the NYSE and Nasdaq closed on the same days?

Yes. Both exchanges close on the same holidays and use the same 1:00pm early closes, so a
holiday for one is a holiday for the other.
